Future Diary #01 — *Intense Whining Noise*

October 9th, 2011

Oh wait, that’s the main character.

In case you were curious about what was going on in puzzle-land this week, it was salsa. Exceedingly salsa.

Impressions:

Ugh. The most animated thing in the episode was Deus, and ‘he’ was made out of a giant mass of clumsy CG. Almost all the rest was the oh so exciting parade of stills and talking heads, making it probably the second worst animated first episode of the season after F-Zero’s with nowhere near the art quality to match. There was some pretty decent direction highlighting Yuno’s obession, but she barely appears at all for the first half and even with that aside, a couple moments of good lighting and artistic direction do not make up for an otherwise completely visually bland affair. And since the rest is about 75% Yukiteru bemoaning his fate and 25% exposition… well… I feel like I’ve already more than covered my problems lately with godawful storytelling. How about a narrative, damn it? You can’t just have your characters say how they feel. That makes me angry.

In any case, I spent almost the entire thing bored and clock watching. I was even less impressed with this than I was the ‘pilot’ OVA. Possibly because even less happened and this was three times as long, so it had 200% more of Yukiteru whining, at least. I will admit that the post ED segment of the serial killer repeatedly destroying the phone as the mascot character tried to explain what it was made me chuckle, but that’s about it. And if you’re watching this for the comedy, then either you’ve already had enough absinthe, or you’re going to need a whole lot more.

9 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

There was one thing I did dislike about this series… and that’s Yukiteru being a whiny nub 95% of the time.

    • amyable says:

He gets less whiny as the series goes on. It takes a while, though, and our Duke of Arrow may not be willing to stick around and blog it that long. In any case, Yuno is the main draw of the series; she takes a lot of the focus away from Yuki (and his many flaws) and onto her. If you’re into her character archetype (don’t wanna use DAT WORD), you will like this show.

      • Nan says:

I would agree she is more of a draw than him. I’m not even much of a fan of THAT WORD, but it was interesting enough to keep me reading to see what crazy shit she would do next. And how far the Universe would go to top itself screwing Yukiteru each time.

I will say though, one of the few times I have felt a genuine chill of fear down my spine was that chapter with that damn scene of her looking at him through the mail slot. Hrgaklsfjl;kadjdf.

Im pretty happy with the first episode, hopefully they will maintain the good work in the whole series. Oh, please, Madoka-sama!!
And the face of Yuno in the end… Woah!

  • Albedo says:

Honestly I was rather disappointed by this episode. I was never a big fan of the plot in the first place anyway though. Hopefully now that they’ve gotten the introductions out of the way they can show some of the chemistry between Yuno and Yukiteru. Rather big letdown that Yuno didn’t get anywhere near creepy until the final shot of her.
