Ben-to #01 — CG and Thighs
October 8th, 2011
I’m almost surprised that they didn’t combine the two.
Impressions:
At least there’s one show on Saturdays that’s just straight up bad. Not that I expected anything out of David Production besides godawful CG in strange places, and I certainly got that. I think my ‘favorite’ CG moment was the food bar in a microwave. Satou is annoying as hell too. Almost the entire first half of the episode is just one long string of thought from him. Shut the hell up for a moment. Stop telling us every single thing that you’re seeing and your entire life story. Or at least come up with something more intelligent than "I couldn’t hear what she said… could it have been… ‘Do me.’" No, you worthless piece of garbage. It doesn’t even bring much, if anything in the way of T&A either unless you’ve got an extreme stocking fetish. His only saving grace is that he somehow manages to be less annoying that his shrill braying hyena of a sidekick.
The action scene towards the end was actually fairly decent but it did abuse the stills heavily very similarly to the way Majikoi’s first episode did and the general direction/cohesion of that fight scene was rather weak. Not to mention that it was short. And had a jazz trumpet for some reason. The rest of the episode was poor to worse as far as art and animation were concerned though. There are stills in the most bizarre of places too, like a still of Satou having water poured on him to wake him up that they ‘cleverly’ tried to hide by shaking the camera. Seriously, David? A still of water being dumped out of a bucket? What is this, a boxing anime from 1975? Did they just take that shot right out of the source, color it in, and then nip off for body shots?
Anyway, all intensely irritating leads and aside from the fight at the end, it was about 18 excrutiatingly painful minutes. I’m not even sure how it’s trying to distinguish itself. There’s not enough T&A to appeal to that crowd or make it over the top enough to be amusing to write about, which leaves what… CG fetishists? Regardless, there’s already plenty of other things on Saturdays regardless and I would imagine that the action in normal Gonzo Nu-Gonzo fashion was a first episode-only deal anyway with the piss poor production that otherwise dominated the episode being the par. I’ll figure out what to do with all the rest of Saturdays later, but there’s one show culled for now.

Well, shucks. I had a lot of hopes pinned on this show since it sounded so unique and right up my alley with its supposed food focus. I was hoping for something a bit like Yakitate!! Japan, or a more adult-ish version of Yumeiro Patissiere. Guess that’s not the case, then?
Thanks for your very honest review. I’m still going to watch this since I’ve stubbornly looks forward to it for so long, but I’ll try to hold back any expectations I might have had.
