The Mystic Archives of Dantalian #09 — Recursive Booking

September 9th, 2011

I think it was an excuse to get even lazier with the animation.

Impressions:

And as we wind down to the last four episodes, they’re finally going to start bringing in that other pair or get the plot going, right? No. In fact, Hugh and Dalian are barely even in the episode. Most of it is focused on a girl in a world created by a book. Not a girl trapped in a world created by a book, just a girl in a book world. She didn’t even do anything interesting herself or have any issues. She just happened to be the first person that Hugh and Dalian stumbled upon, so of course that required at least 8 minutes of introduction to her before we got to that. Otherwise, how could we have put her standing around and gaping into the proper context?

If they were going for that to be some kind of surprising reveal, then the whole thing shouldn’t have been drawn and animated differently, but hey, might as well stretch that out for a good third of the episode. It was a little funny how obviously uncomfortable they were with the old-timey style too. I think at one point, Dalian’s head consisted of 80% mouth. Anyway, I’ve said it all before. Another boring episode where the main characters don’t really do anything. This time, they literally weren’t even present for half of the episode before showing up, just saying what was going on, and then reading away the bugs.
