Burn him!

Impressions:

And the award for the least animated show of the season goes here. At least so far. We’ll see if there are any other contenders. Oh sure, the art’s consistent and the backgrounds are detailed, but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s more movement out of the CG people than the entire main cast. Hell, after a musical minute long montage of chores, it’s off to about another minute of just staring at almost literally random backgrounds. Here’s the shopping center. Here’s the forge. Here’s a signboard. Visually stunning. It also prevents there from being much in the way of compelling character interaction since there’s relatively little focus on them. If you removed all drifting stills of backgrounds and scenery, I think this episode would have been seven minutes long.

But Aroduc, you wry ponce, you might say, this is an anime for healing and you clearly have no soul to heal. Well, you know what? You’re goddamned right. There’s nothing here for anybody that wants to do anything but watch some people do chores while listening to calming music. Might as well flip through someone’s vacation album with ocean sounds playing. Except for the OP. Those kinds of sounds may require autotuning the vigorous application of a cheese grater to cat. There’s little interesting or compelling about the characters or interactions either. Japanese girl does Japanese things, guy screams about old man teaching her perverted things, everybody learns about each other’s cultures, yada yada yada, they live, they love, they learn, I doze off. Seen it once, seen it a hundred times.

So whatever. It’s extremely unambitious and trying to sell itself on little more than relaxing music and a few very old very tired cliches. It reminds me a lot of all those tedious World Masterpiece adaptations of literature like Anne of Green Gables and Cosette, only it looks like it was made after 1990… with CG people.

Oddly, neither was I about to say, “Aroduc, you wry ponce”, nor am I likely to in the foreseeable future.

  • Yue says:

    Studio Ghibli is sad.

  • Aex says:

It reminded me of Aria(wonder why lol >.<). Not as much of a "feel good" show yet, but it's one of those things you watch with a little smile and never have to worry about the sky falling. Then again, I like my mellow.

  • Anonymous says:

    Sure isn’t another Emma.

  • The Phantom says:

This lasted me 1 min, the moment I realized that the little girl acting ‘CUTE’ was all the plot, I dropped it.

who knows, might be good. or maybe not

will check it when I have the time
