Blood-C #01 — Saya’s Everyday Life

July 1st, 2011

Basketball and vampires? This show has it all.

Apparently the first episode had a special webcast today! Like I have any idea what’s going on. Its first episode doesn’t air for realsies until next Thursday.

Impressions:

That was a little… underwhelming. It does look good, quite good, although it bleeds Clamp from every oriface. There was one hilarious animation goofup that stood out. Saya fakes left, fakes right, then swishes the basketball from half court like a bullet. Production IG temporarily forgot how perspective works, I guess. The fight scene at the end was also quite well done, even if it looked a bit silly to have a bowling pin mantis trotting around. IG also couldn’t quite decide on its method of locomotion. First it just jetted around, then it walked on claws, then it I think it scampered. Those are minor quibbles with the production though. It looked and sounded solid.

My main problem with it though is, like many similar shows, it’s not cohesive. I could have cared less about the first 17 or so minutes, but it would have taken significant effort on my part. It was just mindnumbingly dull bits of Saya wandering around, talking to her classmates, having tea, yawn and groan. Not to wax philosophic here, but a story should have all its parts working together to form a beautiful tapestry. I should not be able to literally see where the director hit the pause button and said "crap, we need to put some action into this episode to hook the audience, drop everything and fight a statue in a lake."

Unfortunately, aside from admiring the nice background and Clampishly long appendages, the three minutes of fighting was the only time the episode was engaging to me. Shows don’t need to start with nonstop explosions, but they should start with something more than some bad CG and 15 minutes of Saya’s Boring Daily Life, with all past indications being that it’ll eventually become 20 minutes of Saya’s Melancholic Life. I’ll give it another looksie or two (in two weeks when episode 2 airs!), but it’s going to have to be a whole lot more engaging than this episode was with the glut of other Thursday shows.

  • Jenanime4eva says:

What the f*ck are Touya and Yukito doing in this anime? XD

    • Aroduc says:

Clamp ran out of character designs 10 years ago.

      • jingoi says:

So I guess that means they’ll be a new series that is a sequel to Tsubasa Chronicle that will now include Saya eventually.

  • Dave Baranyi says:

In screen cap #34, are those twins sucking on Saya’s boobs? If so, this series might have more going for it than I expected…

  • Travis says:

Gah. Compare that with the original – I’m not a fan of either myself, but at least the Last Vampire had a unique visual aesthetic, with cool shading and characters with(!) lips. Even though it’s not really for me, I’d kill to see more innovative(?) design stuff like that at least tried – and here we’ve got it gone full circle, with this looking generically Clamp-y.

I imagine I could replace the dialogue this effort with something else and almost not know the difference. It does have nice production, though. So… There’s that.

  • Chen says:

It could be worse. It could be Vampire Knight.

  • jingoi says:

I’m still waiting for a dub which I’m certain there will be with all the “great plot” anime coming to the US these days. Get it?

  • Jack says:

Well, it’s no Gosick, but it doesn’t look terrible.

  • bk47 says:

I never liked any of blood series so I will pass on this one

  • shadow says:

and the next the vampires have tentacles

blade is 1000 times best it.

  • Yue says:

I expect Clow Reed and Yuuko to appear randomly interfering with plot.

    • Travis says:

That would’ve been a huge improvement, from what I gather. I liked their trollish antics, especially as they got clearer. Then again, I haven’t actually steeled myself to watch Blood-C, so… Yeah.

      • Yue says:

        You can. YOU MUST!

This isn’t some girly shoujo anime like Kimi ni Todoke. CLAMP collaborations are often decent like what happened to Code Geass. Just think of this as the complete opposite of Kobato.

  • sterling01 says:

Did David Bowie show up yet?

  • The Phantom says:

Loved that fight scene, amazing means amazing, my favorite new show so far.
