Blade #01 — A Triumph of Modern Anime
July 1st, 2011
Truly a marvel.
Impressions:
Holy crap. This was the most amazing show ever. Those production values were godly. Everything about this screamed epic anime that will revolutionize the way that we do business. I can say without a doubt that this is already possibly the best show of the season, maybe the year. I won’t tell you what happened, but trust me, it was epic.
Wouldn’t it be hilarious if I actually wrote something like that?
After a year of Marvel adaptions, this is basically more of the same, only everything takes place at night, so it’s harder to see what’s going on than usual. If anything, I think they’ve gotten lazier. The first five minutes of the show is a flashback to Blade’s mother getting bit and him being born, then the OP plays, then there’s another flashback to Blade’s mother getting bit and him being born. You read that right. The first five minutes of this show contain two different flashbacks to the same event. And then later, he flashes back to her a third time, but it’s just stills, thank god.
The production is even worse than Wolverine or X-Men too. The ‘action’ scenes are full of generic stills that don’t even bother to draw a background or enemies. Just Blade against a black background. Blade’s apparently too emotionless to move even during fights. There’s also an extreme abuse of slow motion with blurring between frames. Who does Madhouse think they are, JC Staff? The point is, no surprises here and no real reason to care about this more than any of these other Marvel wrecks. Madhouse certainly hasn’t gotten better between X-Men and this, and is never going to live up to the entertainment value provided by "Feel My Claws."
