[C] #05 — Random Encounters

What? No nuke to automatically win? I’m shocked by this change. Shocked!

Soapbox time. If I see one more person call the subtitle of this show "The Money of Soul and Possibility Control" then I’m going to slap someone. The subtitle is "The Money of Soul and Possibility." It’s written as "TMoSaP –LINE BREAK / NEW FONT- Control," with a giant C in the background. One makes sense given that the Midas money is of THEIR SOULS and their FUTURE POSSIBILITY. The other is you being mentally handicapped. Also note that the giant C contains a bunch of concepts that start with C…  although one of these things is not like the others.

Impressions:

Very enjoyable first third or so of the episode, and the funniest part… even when slicing up golems and gutting people, Kimimaro still manages to suck by calling off MSYU at the last second and letting her get hurt. At least take the blow yourself, jerkface. Of course, I have no idea why we watched two other battles, but hey, it beats watching Kimimaro mope around for another episode. The episode was very weird all around. Not with the usual surreal direction, that’s normal for the show. This was more like the writers tossed together a bunch of unrelated scenes and called it an episode. In an amusing way at least though. Such as MSYU demanding to be fed ramen and Kimimaro nearly feeding it to her through the credit card… or the weird spiderwoman-thing at the end of it.

On the other hand, the second half of the episode was back to the usual info dumps on still images where they talk about the world in abstract terms in Mikuni’s swank penthouse suite rapenasium. Yes, yes, Midas Money is eeeeeevil. We can tell because you’re not actually showing how it’s evil. The setting itself could be sort of interesting, but since the protagonist has no personality, no drive, no ambition, no real reason to do anything, there’s still no real weight to any of it. If not for the "must battle every week" rule, Kimimaro would be fully in character to just get up and walk away without caring. The recycled footage of portal-man’s fight was also a little terrible. Compared to the three other battles this episode, recycled footage vs "I can make keyholes appear in you" was not exactly a good fight, especially compared to shooting the orgasming gungirl and "Man running around like an airplane" fights at the start of the episode.

FYI, two things. First, Enma got a double airing special today on MBS to put it back on Thursdays (CURSE YOU!). Also, it and Softenni will be a little delayed. I have to pick somebody up from the airport shortly.

what the fuck, kimimaro had that fight but msyu had to go and fuck things up.

    • Aroduc says:

Not really. He was trying for one of those gimpy half-wins while she was going for the killing blow.

  • Aex says:

A lot better then it’s been at least, although still kinda boring.

Best part of this show is seeing what the bizarre creatures they fight are, and how they fight them.
