Deadman Wonderland #01 — Delicious Candy
April 16th, 2011
You’d think life-saving candy would be in better containers than little plastic twisties.
Impressions:
Well, it’s an intro episode. And it’s Manglobe. Which means that production continues to be okayish, music continues to be either fitting or very bizarrely out of place. I did find it amusing that when Ganta was attacked in court, somebody dropped their cell phone (or whatever magical future device that was) and then patiently waited for it to finish playing. Even the cops. Although since when they then zoomed out, the entire courthouse was empty, I think people just got up and left. I mean, there’s only a brawl going on right in front of them.
Anyway, I found most of this very very dull. While Ganta going catatonic and pseudo-suicidal from seeing his classmates killed and getting blamed for it is realistic, that doesn’t mean that it’s interesting or engaging either. Dr. Richard Kimble would have already broken out by this point, mastered his blood powers, and set off in hot pursuit of the one-armed man that killed his family. Ganta, on the other hand, is wondering what those strange large lumps of flesh on the chest of that weird non-boy creature-thing in front of him are. Ending the episode with a mini-montage of people eating candy (life-saving AND bad for you!) didn’t improve my attitude either. Montages never do.
I’ll give it a little more to see if it’ll actually do anything now that the fairly generic "wrongly-accused" introduction is out of the way, but since this is Manglobe and they’re already padding out the time with montages, I don’t really have too much hope that it’s going to get much better. Making fun of Ganta’s monosyllabic vocabulary can only take me so far. Plus, if they were going for a very visceral show, then the censoring is going to cause some major issues. …And randomly popping in boob jokes isn’t helping either.
Preview:
I’m not seeing much of anything going on here either.
