Astalotte’s Toy #01 — The Haze Filter

April 10th, 2011

My eyes are starting to hurt.

Impressions:

Ye gods. It was a trial to even stay awake through this. Almost the entire first eight minutes of the show was just straight exposition given in the form of an oh so exciting school lecture. I suppose that you were supposed to be able to stay interested because the entire cast was naked through it. Diomedea’s apparently taking lessons from Shana’s exposition tricks. Of course, that would work better if the entire magical world wasn’t covered in a haze plus even more haze from bath censoring. All I can really do there is make some phallus jokes about banana boats and I don’t think the first half was even worthy of that.

The second half wasn’t much better either. The show is not well produced at all. Animation is sparse and there is absolutely no energy to anything, visually, musically, directorially, dialoguely…ly. The characters were little more than cardboard cut-outs, there are close to a dozen that it split focus on through the episode, and since it moved at a snail’s pace, nothing even vaguely interesting happened either. Plus, it is absolutely impossible to buy that male lead as an adult when he sounds like he’s going off to play kickball in the sandlot after school.

So yeah. Boring, slowly paced, and did nothing to stand out except add a haze filter to almost everything. Jokes are few, far in-between, and rarely funny. Even the T&A is half-assed. Lotte can be sort of cute at times, but that’s about all the praise I’m willing to give this show.

Preview:

Something happens? No, I doubt it.

  • DmonHiro says:

Holy shit… only the last 5 minutes or so was acually FROM the manga… impressive… in a bad way.

  • Longhaul says:

rotte or lotte, you be the judge

  • Aex says:

Err… bad start? Not that this entire premises sounds very appealing to begin with… Damn my curiosity, but now I gotta know the reasoning behind the bracelet flashing and her logic of getting a guy with a ten-year-old to sex-up a ten-year-old… Why must I know these things? >.<

So far the princess is the least interesting character, so I’m hoping this has a harem vibe to it.

  • shadow says:

nooooooo more lolis and fanservice noooooooo

  • jingoi says:

Isn’t this show going to die by the wrath of the re-elected ishihara?
Hope not, someone send a loli to rape Ishihara, he’ll die most likely.

  • Yue says:

I banish thee to the deeeeeeepest, daaaaaaaaarkest pits of purgatory. Magnus Exorcimus!

  • Keith 'The Skies of the Rising Half-moon' Kurogane says:

What in the name of Kyuubey did I just watch?!

  • Jack says:

Realizing Yggdrasil is Norse mythology, therefore common, I didn’t realize that the name “Skuld” was also Norse mythology. I thought for a minute, then I stopped.

    • Aex says:

Yeah pretty much her entire incantation plus a lot of the setting seems to be taking from Norse mythology, which is great in itself. Just hope that somehow influences the show to be more then… this.

  • God, I thought Japan wouldn’t be able to fuck up a show about a 10 year old princess looking for cock, but apparently they can!

  • Geo says:

So much glare in this episode, it’s damaging my eyes.

  • Di Gi Kazune says:

    mmm… Rori~~ Shin would loev.

  • marvelous stan says:

Evangeline is the rock against which all other lolis are broken.

  • kawaiiloli says:

    FINALLY

now THIS is a series i can fap to!

  • Dynellen says:

WHY…. Why do anime makers think they can do things better than the… you know original creator of the story? You can say that the basic idea behind this episode was the same as in the manga but only the idea, the actual content was completely different and didn’t feature any of the silly drama over how worried they are over Judit etc.

No dragons/bath/falling from dragon/fooling around with armor… Seriously, stop trying to make up your own story and stick to the original material.
