Please please please.

Impressions:

Not too shabby. Not too great either, mind you, but as far as generic magical girlfriend shows go, it could have been far far worse. The thing that worries me the most about it was the action, which was pretty poor at best. CG cars bouncing around is not good action. Some truly random other parts were much better animated, but overall, this was averagely made at best with plenty of Deen’s traditional shortcuts there if you want to go looking for them. Never a great sign for a first episode. I really dug the light jazz soundtrack though. I’m well aware that I’m weak against jazz, but it was still a good fit and *gasp* complimented a lot of the scenes, especially with Eriko’s perkiness.

Ryuuji is also a totally worthless sponge, so the less said about him the better. Thankfully, his main role seems to be to sigh in depression about having his abundantly breasted cousin drag him into adventures and/or rub her breasts in his face, so he had a curious lack of lines for a character that was on the screen a good 90% of the episode. The rest of the characters were fun in their own ways. Eriko took up most of the screen/speaking time anyway. How much better this show would be if she was the lead. Sigh… Rose’s vocabulary took ten minutes to expand from "Ryuuji" to "Ryuuji" and "ice cream," but aside from the usual nasally Kugyu voice, she’s cute too. Dragons in this universe are apparently approximately the equivilent in mental capacity to cats.

Overall, it’s really just another relatively cookie cutter magical girlfriend series, one of about a dozen. It’s lighter on the action than many, but the characters are much better handled than most. We’ll see next week if they can match the action to the cute, but they did a good enough job on the execution through the whole episode which is something that almost every show this season has really struggled to manage.
