Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt #01 — Magical Strippers

October 1st, 2010

I’m confused.

Impressions:

I’m not really sure what to say. I didn’t expect the show to be this out and out crass. Panty has sex with four men in the first 12 minutes, and they fight a giant feces monster. It’s certainly not your typical Japanese faire, but strikes me almost like… I don’t even know, some kind of weird marriage between the Power Puff Girls and Stroker & Hoop. I’m not sure that I’d want to watch a show that was like the A part of the episode, despite the kickin’ music in the transformation scene, but the B sequence was a lot of fun. Sure, part of the fun comes from seeing what kind of insane onomatopoeia they kick out (‘stripe’ means slash!), but it was certainly enjoyable.

The fairly unique and extremely dynamic visual style is obviously the big draw here, but the music doesn’t let the show down either. After Sym-Bi being the fiasco for me that it is, this almost feels more like a Tartakovsky show than his own stuff. The main quibble that I have is that the monster destruction sequences of building a little paper mache monster, setting it up against a paper background, and then blowing it up (this is ‘real’ footage) looks extremely tacky and just plain awful. With everything else being stylized and dynamic, why would you include an ugly throwback to corny sentai stuff like that?

So, at once I have a better and a worse impression of it than I expected. I’ll definitely check out the next few episodes and be praying that they follow more of the action side than the "let’s make a ton of poop and vomit jokes" side. The crass stuff is just puerile to a level that even Xebec dares not tread and really detracts from what could be a rather flashy and charming… and disturbing… show.

  • The Deviant says:

Art Style seems some much more fun then the normal stuff we see. Reminds me of Hi Hi Puffy amiyumi… LOL

  • Celestial says:

cartoon network has invaded japan nooooo

  • grunty says:

Totally a Pink version of Dead Leaves. Watch that if you haven’t.

    Can’t wait for more.

  • z says:

    WHAT IS THIS SHIT?

  • Kaisos says:

This is going to be the best season ever.

With just this one show, it is already better than the entire past year.

  • laughingspiral says:

Best show of the season? Pff, This was the best show of the YEAR. I’m still shaking from it.

  • Arabesque says:

I knew that they had said they would make it push the boundaries, but this was … wow, I mean I can’t say it wasn’t fun, but I’ll never be able to look at the Powerpuff’s the same way ever again. Or Dexter Lab.

Wow, I’d love to see what Genndy Tartakovsky has to say about this.

”So, at once I have a better and a worse impression of it than I expected.”
So was that a good thing? Your entire post is giving me mixed signals. So is the show but still

    • Solaris says:

I quote you. This show surely broke some boundaries, specifically those with good taste and the worst cartoon network. ( I mean, not that Power Puff Girls is any bad!)

Maybe they just wanted to sell this to America…

  • sora says:

at first i didn’t think i would like it but… i can’t wait for more!!! the style is so different and I really enjoy it. it was fun!!!

  • Moogy says:

Man, all this did was remind me why I don’t like American cartoons post-Looney Tunes. Totally not my thing.

  • Shippoyasha says:

grunty, I don’t know about it being like Dead Leaves. It feels TOTALLY different. Indeed, it feels like a much more perverse version of Tartakovsky cartoon. Which to me is great. AMAZING. I kinda wish the Power Puff Girls Z was like this a bit (without the crass sexual stuff perhaps) even though I rather enjoyed PPGZ actually.

  • Anonymous says:

from the pics it looks like amy and yumi on drugs (torrents it )

  • The Phantom says:

This looks like one of those braindead Cartoon Network show, why the fuck Japan is airing shitty cartoon-network-like shows?

  • Why is the blonde pulling down her panties? (Am I sure I want to know?)

    • zalkor says:

They transform into her weapon the “Backless” which is basically a pistol, hence why she is called Panty.

Can you guess why the other girl is called Stocking(it transforms into a sword) ?

  • Sporklord says:

If all the matter in the known universe was transformed into W’s T’s and F’s, it would still not be nearly enough.

My mind had just begun to wrap around the sheer amount of bodily fluids being thrown around when they go to the magical stripper transformation and I just lost it. Anyone else hear “You are Ga-gay” during that transformation?

  • cubedice says:

Wow, more people like this than I would’ve thought. It’s too crude for me, there’s like characters blatantly having sex, giant shit monsters, and the animators are on drugs.
I did like the transformation scene, though.

By the way, I didn’t like PowerPuff Girls way back then, so maybe it’s not surprising I don’t like this either.

  • Solaris says:

Let’s discuss how and why actual japan animation is some 80 sec porn like footage…

  • rincewind says:

    WOW! This won the internet…
The monster exploding footage is great! :D

  • Kevin says:

Gainax just trolled the fucking shit out of cartoon network with this, hell yea; remember gurren lagann’s preview of episode 16? Well imagine simon the digger saying “this is how an American cartoon should be done”. Technically speaking this isn’t an anime, its south park. Don’t watch it like u would watch evangelion or gurren lagann or gundam, the characters weren’t made for you to fantasize about (though gainax thinks otherwise, rule 34 with Americanized art work? *nosebleed*) watch it because ur bored as hell and for the lols. And lolz indeed
