Pretty Cure Academy #12 — What A Tweest

September 20th, 2010

When did M Night Shyamalan start writing for A-1?

Impressions:

I really wonder if A-1 has a single editor that looks over these scripts.

"Ha ha! I can attack you because I destroyed your book!"
"Ha ha! That book was a fake!"
"Ha ha! I can attack you anyway!"

My favorite bad writing of the episode was when Mikaze stabs Chihiro and then just leaves. She’s the only person you know of that can possibly get in your way. Why kill her when you can just give her a small slowly bleeding gut wound, giving her ample time to free Uchida and tell him how to defeat you. Wait, no, my favoritest part is how Mikaze hits Bunmei with her knife to try to stop him from reading. Not smack the book away. Not shove her tongue in his throat again to shut him up. Not stab him. But hits him with a giant knife. It’s so close to parody, and yet so far away.

So yeah, Bunmei’s big final moment of manliness is the ability to read a book after Chihiro tells him the page number. I’d say that I’m underwhelmed, but given Bunmei’s past actions and abilities, I’d say that they were stretching the limits of imagination here. Mikaze being the key, yet nothing in the future changing was also a dumb twist. I’m still wondering how witches lead to a future with giant robot walkers and aliens, but I wouldn’t be shocked in the slightest if A-1’s writers completely forgot what they did in earlier episodes. It’s not like Mikaze had any plan beyond the realms of some kind of Queen Beryl-esque plot to open the gateway of evil because she’s super duper evil. At least this episode was kind of fun to watch. It was entirely too ridiculous and the writing too godawful to be called a good episode or a proper fit for the series, but at least A-1’s animation department finally got off their asses and put a little bit of effort into it.

Preview:

…Didn’t they both turn into sparklies?

6 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

I’m just going to assume from here on that the entire “Power of Anime” thingy is an elaborate trolling attempt that works by trying to trap people with okay first episodes with a lot of potential, then proceed to faceplant the rest of the series.

So the “power of anime” is the power to fail completely and ruin everyone’s expectations?

I think you’re right, A-1 are just trying to troll us. That’s why you don’t name your animation studio after a brand of steak sauce.

I think the whole “made by committee” system is ruining anime. They get tightfist funding, must adhere to a tight schedule and must make sure there’s some room for a sequel.

Either that, or the anime industry has no writers.

This is why I don’t watch anime anymore expect for maybe Gundam Unicorn, because I know somewhere down the line, some good premise is going to get bogged down by an awful scripting and shoddy pacing with all the dues ex machina that go with them.

It’s almost a law that says that an anime can’t have a smart script.

Since the beginning of 2010, I haven’t seen any worthy new anime. Maybe it’s the end of anime after all with all the moe shit floating around and hardly no competent male characters. AT. ALL

I wonder if Bunmei’s psychokinesis will ever play a part in the story…

I thought he’s a clone? And he doesn’t really have ESP, does he?
