Arakawa Under the Bridge #05 — Ms. Tomato Head

May 2nd, 2010

Needs more explosives and martial artists.

Impressions:

After Stella and Maria, the clumsy gardener P-ko was just a letdown in every way. She’s clumsy… she gardens… and that’s about it. At least they mixed up a lot of the musical direction this week from usual. The new OP is obvious, but Shaft also made minimal use of that irritating guitar riff that they’ve been using at the start of most segments. On the other hand, it felt like they somehow managed to increase the number of closeups on Kou’s eye this week. I wasn’t sure that was possible, but Shinbo somehow managed to find a way.

The last little bit about Kou being a bum was also not very good and dragged on for far longer than it had any business doing. The whole thing felt artificially stretched out just for the sake of the ‘cliffhanger’ of Star-For-Brains and Kou going Dueling Banjos next week. So not as good as last week’s by a long shot, but at least it started with Maria and ended with Maria. This show has done worse.

  • Haesslich says:

Maria’s bouncing derriere as she sashays across the screen. Yes, this show has had worse ways to start – hell, most SHAFT shows have had worse starts than this.

    At least P-Ko’s cute…

  • Nanaya says:

This series scares the bloody hell out of me, and I’ve only seen it from your screencaps.

  • Anon999 says:

In retrospect, FLCL was better than this. WAY better. So is bobobob-bobobo. This show is just creeping me out.

  • lvlln says:

P-ko’s character might be a bit typical, but that banana sliding scene was hilarious. And Chiaki Omigawa’s voice fits her very well, though she may be being typecast.

  • Celestial says:

    sheryl nome is a jerk

  • NeverTipsy says:

I think this show is decent, I like bakemonogatari more of course. Never did like FLCL. I dont like the little bunny ear – hair thing on P-kos head. Sheryl Nome > Ranka Lee.

  • Ehyoeh says:

Soon as Gintama ended, i think most of the voice actors moved onto this one, i see alot of similarities, its pretty good and a funny anime
