Angel Beats! #02 — Sharks With Lasers

April 9th, 2010

They hit every other bad Bond trap cliche, why not laser sharks?

Impressions:

Sorry, I’ll upload caps later. There were a few technical difficulties and I have errands to run for the next couple hours.

This episode had pretty much the exact same problems as the first episode, only a little bit more segregated. Just a little bit though. They still decided to toss in corny slapstick and joke elbow drops in the middle of super dramatic scenes, or use Yurippe spitting out her entire angsty backstory as the nightcap to 10 minutes of cornball RPG/Evil Genius trap sequences. At least it was 10 minutes of slapstick, 6 minutes of expositional angsty "wait no, we are so deep" hogwash, and then back to the usual mishmash instead of just 20 minutes of mishmash. That’s a step in… some direction. I did honestly laugh at the super hyper mega ultimate chaos final destroyer giga death cannon exploding instead of firing. After all that build up and fellating themselves over it, the thing was just a punchline to a joke. Sure, Angel Beats and I are both laughing, but I don’t think at the same thing.

The action sequence didn’t have a concert this time, but they made up for it by having the camera flail around wildly during the little knife fight. That was… technically sound I suppose… but still very unpleasant to watch. It was also unpleasant to have Otonashi already starting to hero worship Yuri for that matter, especially after mostly whining about everything. Having his head jammed into her crotch and breasts this episode probably sent the hormones tumbling. Notice, however, how they didn’t show his crotch shoved into her face. Gender equality now!

    c’mon Angel Beats…. get better

I want to watch at least one new anime this season and you were my ringer

  • AfroSquirrel says:

I’ll probably keep watching it if only to have an excuse to listen to the OP.

  • Gin says:

OP was good, actually. There haven`t been many, so this is nice.
…If you are looking for the gender equality opposite, I`m sure a quick look at Gelbooru will find the “equality”…not the one you mean, probably.

    Best part of the show.

  • Yue says:

So laser~guided sharks haven’t graced any anime yet? ^_~

  • TJ says:

They should have combined the laser and water traps into laser sharks.

A pretty random episode, but good for 24 minutes of mindless entertainment.

  • Nanaya says:

I don’t know why the traps were such a big issue, it’s not like they could die no matter what happens to them, just inconvenienced at most… I would have been having a blast in that situation.

    • Yue says:

There’s a “TIME TO RESPAWN” mechanic going on here in case of supposed death. ^_^

For now, the traps (same with fighting) do meant to slow down enemies (in this case just one) advance and gain precious time to fulfill winning conditions.

  • FlameStrike says:

    Heh the whole point was that the horrible traps weren’t an issue since they can’t die x.x;
Am I the only one enjoying this lol? Sure the humor to drama transition wasn’t that good, but everything else was fine. I rather enjoyed the fight scene too. For me this is probably the best show this season. Granted that’s not saying much, but it’s something.

  • queenie says:

No, I”m with you FlameStrike. I like the show a lot (compared to all the other Key shows ever made). I just kept thinking of Loony Toons for all the traps and pretty much laughed my ass off at the dramatics they joked about.

Everything’s really fine with the show, so I can’t really complain. It’s just that everyone was expecting either just a drama or just slapstick, and combining the two just opened up the Can of Complain. I’m still going by my logic that if you go into something totally not expecting anything, then you’re better off in the long run to enjoy more. :)

  • Excessive says:

Aside their unnecessary joke, they have pretty animation.

it is just me, or T.K is not a Japanese?

  • Scott says:

This is a Key show, so this happy-slapstick episode is probably to make it so the show contains something besides scenes of violence and sad girls.

    • Yue says:

Good point. Expect everyone to one after another ally with “Tenshi” towards the final episode. ^_~

  • X-3 says:

Guess we’ll find out how Yui died later in the series: I wouldn’t be surprised if it had something to do with those burglars. (did they say if they got caught or not?) Something feels a bit off about her story, but maybe it’s just because it’s a tragic story in the middle of an episode filled with people being offed comically. Also, this is just the second episode, so yeah.

  • The Phantom says:

Loved this episode, yes with cliche traps and all, also I love the angel’s abilities, delay and distortion (tales of eternia anyone? whats next? Stagnation?) are really cool abilities and the battles are quite well animated as well.

I have the feeling that this will have a sad ending, I think that it will turn dead serious at some point and it will go downhill from there with ppl permanently disappearing and stuff like that.

Awesome show, this and ichiban ushiro no daimao are the best shows of this season.
