Guardian Charm Himari #04 — Blood for the Cat God

January 27th, 2010

I so already wasted my WH4K references.

Impressions:

Now we’re getting somewhere. Well, sort of. The amnesia bit remained as stupid as amnesia always does, but like everything this show does, it was over quickly. It’s annoying, but at least it’s an annoyance that lasted all of 5 minutes after it was introduced before being resolved instead of spread out across the entire season. Although it does mean that Himari usurps Rinko for the role of childhood friend, making her even more superfluous to the entire show than she already was.

Yuuto finally manned up a little bit in the second half and we might make a decent human being out of him yet. Who knows where the sudden random misdirected misogyny came from though. And I feel compelled to note that I roll my eyes every time any show uses that horrible "stand in front of somebody and take the sword hit" cliche. If the wound is that light, then the blow would have missed its intended target entirely. And maybe you could have tackled the attacker instead of taking a pose in front of them. I was also rather amused by the ippon-dattara (I think) going from holding off both Shizuku and Kaya (the Amakawa’s hearth spirit) to on its back and about to be executed by Shizuku off-screen.

Brief Summary:

Unhappy with the state of affairs, Himari decides to drag Yuuto out to the Amakawa’s home in the mountains and most of the rest of the harem comes along for the ride. Yuuto starts remembering things when they get there. He’s also told to die by the Amakawa’s hearth spirit, Kaya, who is pissed off about how he treated Himari. Himari later crawls all over Yuuto, bringing back memories from his youth about a cat that he used to spend a lot of time with. He finally remembers that it was Himari. She congratulates him, and tries to give him his naked reward, but they’re interrupted by Ageha, an air spirit.

Ageha and her troops attack the party. She refuses to back down, so Himari convinces Yuuto to run away, but after a few moments, he stops, changes his mind, and turns around. He returns and barely manages to protect Himari from Ageha’s killing blow, but seeing Yuuto’s chest slashed open sends Himari into a berserker rage. After she wrecks the area, Yuuto barely manages to stand up and stop her from killing Ageha as his power flares.

I’m afraid I don’t understand how you can accuse shows like this of the usual shounen misogyny and still manage to watch them.

…Great… Tama… I tell you they are very bad (asshole-ish)antagonists and the fact that we’re seeing them so early is clearly a bad thing…
