Kobato. #01 — Idiot Savant

October 6th, 2009

Oi, one of these.

Season Premier Disclaimer:

I like to check almost every new show out. The value of a show is in its execution, not its premise. That said, my tastes are mine and mine alone. Some things bother me, some things don’t. I will attempt to be as cogent as possible as to my complaints or compliments for each show, but be aware that my views skew heavily towards the center. Nothing is perfect, nothing is irredeemable. That said, my tastes and my opinions are mine and mine alone and should not be construed as fact or, god help us, some kind of erudite critical analysis of the entire series based on the show’s first 20 minutes. Feel free to leave your own thoughts on the show if you’d like, but invective and similar will be mocked or deleted depending on which amuses me more at the time.

I actually watched this at home, and am now typing this up in my (useless) stats class.

Impressions:

Ahhhh, watching things at 7am. No, wait, watching girly things at 7am and then writing them up an hour later while ‘learning’ that the probability of a coin flip is 50%. Now that’s an experience to relish.

Regardless of my pre-fully-awake sarcasm, this was a pretty good and a very very cute episode. Outside of the corny cherry blossom shower, the art was all very good, the shifts into the more humorous styles were cute, and while it’s certainly not going to win any accolades for animation, it was definitely servicable enough. The music was all nicely done enough as well, although they really probably should have picked a song that didn’t have high notes for Kana Hanazawa to completely miss. Ouch. I could have also done without listening to that wailing baby for a couple straight minutes. Ugh. You made your point. The thing is irritating as hell. Stop antagonizing your audience, please.

My biggest complaint with the show, and this is very close to a deal breaker, is that I really don’t like the character of Kobato at all. I’ve never really liked the idiot characters that bumble around and psychologically heal other characters, and she’s even worse than the likes of Tohru Honda or Onizuka. She’s far far faaaaaaar past cute clumsiness to me and well into impossibly mentally handicapped. A lot of it could be solved by some small changes in direction, like not exaggerating her clumsiness to impossible levels, but who knows if they’ll actually do that. I also rolled my eyes a bit when they began the show by sitting down and having the characters flat out state the entire premise for Kobato’s little magical healing journey.

I’ll probably give it another episode or two to see if Kobato grows on me at all, but I’m not really holding my breath. If you like those kinds of characters and stories though, I’m certainly not going to make fun of you for liking this. It’s a very solid production and I don’t think anybody that was looking forward to this will be disappointed.

15 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Ravage says:

Pretty much the only show that is worth watching for me this season. There are like 5 bajillion sequels this season, none of which I have watched any prior installments of. The rest mostly seem plain uninteresting or bad(-ly produced) to me. Clamp story and designs + Madhouse production + Hanazawa Kana is reason enough for me to have at least 1 show to look forward to on a weekly basis.

    • Azure says:

Agreed. Less clones and asspulls, more cute and high pitched.

    • Travis says:

Thirded. Well, not the *only* show, but it’s on at a good time for me…

Also, statistics *do* suck. What I love is how teachers seem to act like their information is so revolutionary; and it’s amazing how little of the stuff they’ve put years into learning they put into practice or expect us to. Tch.

  • たた says:

I am up for a CLAMP show without nonsense plot twists \o/

  • I like the song and animation~

    but too much Kobato . . . my eyes . . . are bleeding . . aaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!!! x_x

It seems they made the exam parts shorter. Lucky anime viewers for not going through that painfully dumb arc =_=

  • Di Gi Kazune says:

CLAMP ero-baba need to put more H in this show.

  • Celestial says:

    BESTO SHOW OF THE SEASON

    i’ll watch it next season

    • Yue says:

Mmmmmm… we hope so. Compared to To aru Kagaku no Choudenjibo or Darker than Black season 2, this show received less hype and less anticipation. Not that its a bad thing.

  • chad001 says:

“worse than the likes of Tohru Honda and Onizuka,” WTF?

Tohru I get, but Onizuka, you can’t even put them on the same scale… Onizuka is like the father of all manliness, and forceful reformation, while Tohru Honda,…

Not even close, she’s the girl that everyone has to watch over 24/7 a weakling, and the only thing she does to help is cry, and make over-dramatized speeches that people only listen to due to the lack of another main character.

    • Aroduc says:

*shrug* He’s a bit different and probably not the best example, but still mostly an idiot who does whatever he wants and then events always conspire so that things work out perfectly for all involved despite him knowing or realizing any better. It’s not a comparison I’m really to hang my hat on anyway though, so whatever.

    • ero baba says:

Chad, did you read the manga? Because if that is your impression of her as a character you are very mistaken.

  • Yue says:

Easy there. Give Kobato a chance since it isn’t shallow that it’s a no-brainer nor it’s complex that one drowns in bucket of plot-twists.

Now, if only she changes clothes everyday and not wear the same greens then visual-wise it gets a similar treatment like in CCS.

Darn you CLAMP, finish the story in Wish. ^_^

  • […] my 2D girls saccharine, and Kobato definitely fits the bill. And I definitely have a weakness for idiot savants if Yui and Nodame are any examples. Kana Hanazawa does a great job. She’s had an excellent […]

I wouldn’t have been able to make it through the episode if it wasn’t for her toy dog doll. I’ll check out the second episode just for that.
