A Certain Magical Letter Bee #01 — Endless Buzzing

October 3rd, 2009

There will be an answer, letter bee.

Season Premier Disclaimer:

I like to check almost every new show out. The value of a show is in its execution, not its premise. That said, my tastes are mine and mine alone. Some things bother me, some things don’t. I will attempt to be as cogent as possible as to my complaints or compliments for each show, but be aware that my views skew heavily towards the center. Nothing is perfect, nothing is irredeemable. That said, my tastes and my opinions are mine and mine alone and should not be construed as fact or, god help us, some kind of erudite critical analysis of the entire series based on the show’s first 20 minutes. Feel free to leave your own thoughts on the show if you’d like, but invective and similar will be mocked or deleted depending on which amuses me more at the time.

Impressions:

Good god. The first 6 minutes of the episode were nothing but exposition, followed by the attack of the giant CG beetle. Wait no, more exposition. I forgot that he had to explain how he fights too, and how his gun works, and then after killing it in one shot, more exposition on how your magic gun works. You’re killing me here, deadly deadly bees. Killing me. None of it was even subtle either. Just one long bout of expositional diarrhea from start to finish.

Art was all rather good, animation was essentially nonexistent for the vast majority of the episode. There was almost no BGM whatsoever, which certainly didn’t help the endless exposition… or the corniness of it either. "You shot me with your heart, and now I’m touched by you." I’m not sure whether to claw out my brain or my ears. Oh yeah, and as long as we’re pointing out the obvious cheapness quotient, the episode was 17 minutes long. Congrats, you’re 10% shorter than most shows and didn’t even make up for it by making the rest of the show any better. Although, I guess it’s a blessing that I didn’t have to set through another two minutes of it.

So, it’s pretty bad, albeit not exactly in the way that I expected. Maybe you could take it as a good sign that the exposition is all out of the way so now they could do something else… ANYTHING ELSE. That’s really not what you want to be feeling after the first episode though.

OP’s preemptively blocked on YouTube and I so do not care enough about this show to find somewhere else to upload it.

They certainly weren’t very liberal with their color pallete.

  • hashi says:

I get what you mean, but I loved this episode. The 22 minutes just flew by. Outstanding voice acting from Sawashiro Miyuki and Fukuyama Jun. Through those two voices, the exposition brought me close to the characters. And I thought the look was great. Good story well told, as far as I am concerned. And I loved the both the OP and ED songs. But I should add that there are mixed reactions to the show on 2channel, including many people who agree with you. I can also add that both the director and lead writer are doing those jobs for the first time.

    • Aroduc says:

You kept watching a full minute after the show was entirely over?

And I really could not possibly care less what 2ch thinks. They can suck it. Popularity shouldn’t affect your own opinion anyway, and it’s a terrible argument for or against watching something.

  • Kikaifan says:

In fairness, I like that dude’s hat. Big old bee like that, you know a man’s not afraid of anything.

  • Dana says:

I wasn’t bored by the exposition, this just feels like a slowly paced RPG when everyone is just hanging out enjoying the atmosphere and telling ghost stories.

    I look forward to more:)

  • Adanos says:

Aaah, even when I read the really long first chapter of the manga a while ago (when the author makes all this exposition…AND EVEN MORE), I felt VERY bored with this episode.
Geez, the pace was slow, but with a vomitive amount of info of the Bees, and so on… hope that the next episodes don’t be so dense with exposition (warning: amazingly high probability of “baaw” scenes ahead)

  • The Phantom says:

This is just not my kind of show, I barely watched 5-7 mins of this show b4 dropping it out, but based on the pics it seems they abused of blue backgrounds.

  • Travis says:

Seriously. You can tell a bad anime – hell, a bad story in general – when they break rule #1. Show, not tell. Do the writers think we’re so stupid that we have to be told everything about your heart spirit phlebotonium? Or that we even care? Or are they just so bad at writing dialogue overseas, that they have to make every sentence expositionary?

*MAYBE* if we were into the actual story, it’d make sense to know more about it or some of the other crap going on. I remember you talking once about how the removal of sarcasm in China caused a ripple effect; would you happen to know why so many productions from east asia feature buckets of exposition?
