When the Seagulls Cry #12 — Talking to Yourself

September 16th, 2009

New arc, new crazies.

Impressions:

Well, for the first episode of a new… er… episode, this wasn’t too bad, but it dragged like hell in the second half. Like the early episodes in the other two arcs, this one didn’t really do much except reintroduce the characters and give us slightly more background on a couple of them. This time, the focus was on Beatrice’s past so, we got our first peak into the previous endless witch, Virgilia, and crazy crazy Eva, who is going to be the centerpiece of this particular iteration. Beatrice’s butler, Ronove, also showed up to give the witches some eyecandy for when they get tired of being stuck with Battler over the next thousand years.

As for the rest… meh. I have little to comment on except to note that I’m pretty sure most of the females on the cast are slowly inflating. Kyrie seemed to grow another cup size every time they cut back to her during the rather dull argument at the end of the episode, and teenage Eva looked like the left side of her body stopped going through puberty about a year after the right side. Deen also particularly loved to highlight Jessica’s thighs every single time she was on the screen this episode. The crotch-cam shot was particularly… er… present. At least we didn’t get a Basic Instinct moment.

12 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Why are Virgilia’s eyes open? She supposed to have them closed all the time, except when she’s being really scary.

    • Ian says:

I think I may understand why DEEN decided to open her eyes. I try to picture them closed, but I just don’t see it. Not in these scenes, anyway.

But maybe they’ll do something about those “really scary” moments.

    • Digdri says:

I don’t see why this had to be changed… its a well established trope in anime to have characters with eyes always closed and usually smiling innocently to give them a hint of “mask” they are wearing…

On the other side its ok the way they did it because Virgilia can be a really human and caring character …. I think with never seeing the eyes some of those scenes might not come of so good. After all this whole ideas about open / closed / “dim” eyes revolves around the eye being the mirror to the soul.

And its still easy to differentiate between half closed and e.g. staring wide open (think Maria reading the letter).

  • Benny1 says:

Virgilia has open eyes because Studio DEEN sucks at designs.

The remix of far that is bound to play next episode better be good.

  • sage says:

Loli Beato’s everything is a miracle of the universe.

  • karasu says:

what’s with the super saiyan-feel to the beato-virgilia fight in the OP?

    • Digdri says:

Well it was meant to have this feel in the games or perhaps even mocking this shounen action style… this scene was even more over the the top then you might imagine…. but in a good way.

I really hope they don’t shrew up this part but if the OP is any indication this will be really cool… otherwise there is still the awesome fan-made CG version of this part on the net ;) DEEN will have a hard time beating that with their usual production quality :)

Deen cut out Bern saying Nipaa…

    How… could they…

  • Anonymous says:

Wow finally they included Ushiromiya Ange in the OP sequence =)

  • Bill says:

DEEN can’t draw characters with closed eyes.

  • thatguy says:

It’s okay so long as they make Virgilia scary as hell when she needs to be. And they better not screw up that magic fight, that would just piss me off.

  • Cross says:

….They took out my “fight on! -nanodesu~”

    …..RAAAAAGGEEE
