Summer Storm #01 — Yukkuri Sighting

April 5th, 2009

God damn it, Shaft. Why would you put those in?

New Season Disclaimer:

I prefer to give every show a chance. You never know when your dream-eating insect wielding Mai HiME knockoff will turn out to be a psychological romantic thriller, or the strange moeblob show will be full of wit and urine jokes. However, my preferences are still my preferences, and while I’ll endevor to at least convey why I do or do not like things, there are genres of shows that I just plain don’t particularly enjoy. My opinions are based on nothing more than a gut reaction to what I watched literally 10-15 minutes prior and should be construed as nothing more and nothing less than that.

Apparently this is also going to be up on Crunchyroll. *shrug*

Impressions:

Okay… this was quite a bit different from the source. Arashi and Kaya’s abilities to travel to the past is just sort of something they use when convenient, in this case to retrieve a strawberry filled with spicy crap. I’m surprised it took them 10 minutes to explain how 3 – 1 = 1. And that was the first half of the episode. Time travelling to pick up a tainted strawberry. The second part was the other strawberry/cake was missing so they all just start running around through various parts of the past looking for it, just to learn that future Kaya was the one that took it in the first place. Certainly very very very different from the source in just about every way.

It’s certainly well… different… from what I expected. Production was Shaft’s usual Shaftyness, although I will say that I wasn’t a big fan of the music. Very little of the humor clicked with me and I continue to despise Hajime with a passion born of the firey depths of Styx. I did like that they used a pretty light touch with introducing their abilities and powers without beating us over the head with them or lots of shocked reactions and whatnot. Still though, I wasn’t really entertained, and I spent about a quarter of the episode really bothered by the 3-1=1 thing. Yes, they explained it eventually, but how could the characters not notice that?

So… meh from me thus far. The horse-faced women scare me, Hajime sucks, and while I think there is some potential for good time travel jokes, this episode really didn’t show that, so I’m really not sure I want to stick around just yet.

It looks like the episodes are being shuffled like Haruhi, because the first episode was not suppose to be this. I guess this is typical shaft.

The opening makes the show look terrible.

I was actually pretty impressed by the manga but this looks terrible.

This is why Shaft and Shinbo should never adapt something that isn’t batshit insane already.

    >this episode really show that.

    typos, in MY blogpost?

Seriously what happened with Jin Kobayashi’s art anyways? When SR started, it was easy to look at, funny, and just so romantic, but when it reared towards the end, the art took a dive, it was still funny, but the rough lines that were strangely reminiscent of those really old boxing manga, just didn’t cut it out for me.

Now that style bleeds into Natsu No Arashi!?
NNA was something I enjoyed to read, mostly because it had something to appeal to me more than SR. There was some more things other than relationships to go into detail with NNA. Like the relationship with the past, how they whole opposite gender stuff works. There was just something whimsical about it.

But……I really miss how clean Kobayashi’s art used to be.
