Birdy the Mighty: DECODE #10 — Ew! Cooties!

September 5th, 2008

At least look like you’re enjoying frenching a doomsday device, Senkawa.

Impressions:

What was really amusing about this episode to me was how they couldn’t make up their mind as to how to end the episode, so instead of just focusing on one bad cliffhanger, they gave us three of them. Nakasugi kissed Senkawa (while he looked absolutely petrified… a girl kissing a boy? GROSS), fade to black. Run credi– wait wait, show’s still going. Nakasugi comes home to find her grandfather murdered and after being screamed at for being a fake and a killer, she proves the old biddy wrong by… killing her. Fade to black with Nakasugi’s evil grin. Run credi– wait wait… show’s still going. Birdy takes a sample of Nakasugi’s sweat she gathered earlier and then angrily clenches her fist. Ah, there are the credits.

Any one of them would have been cheesy enough since they all cover things that the audience has known for well over a month now, but all three is just overkill. Not to mention that we already spent about 5 minutes watching Birdy argue to her superiors that Nakasugi is the doomsday device that they’re looking for, so her confirming it for the second, or arguably the third time doesn’t really have too much impact. Congratulations, Birdy… you’re the second to last horse to cross the finish line here, trailed only by Senkawa who will no doubt have some whining to do next episode. I’m not sure what Nakasugi’s defense is going to be, now that her entire family is dead, but Senkawa will no doubt find some horrible rationale for saying that it’s not her fault and love power will save the day when overwhelming firepower proves insufficient.

Basically, a melancholic Birdy and the majority of the episode centered around Senkawa’s fumbling attempts to pity date someone who already wants to jump his bones… not exactly the most interesting episode to me, to put it lightly. I do hope that Senkawa in glasses in the preview means that he’s finally spit out of Birdy’s body, but the existence of the second season makes me know that he’ll do something stupid to end up right back in it. Hopefully it’s blocking one of Nakasugi’s attacks and going all sparkly, making her go even crazier. Unfortuantely, I assume that it’ll just be consciously blocking Birdy’s killing blow on Nakasugi, thus showing the power of caring blah blah blah the Power of Love wasn’t even a good Hewis Lewis song, let alone a passable plot device.

Preview:

Angsting and unconsciousness. Two of my favorite things.

The ep is categorized wrong. Almost couldn’t find your bashing of this series.
