2008 Spring Season Week 1 Comprehensive Wrapup

April 10th, 2008

Too. Damn. Many. New. Shows. Aroduc tired!

Well, I’ve watched everything new except for Junjou Romantica, which I can’t imagine I’ll actually follow… Golgo 13, which starts tomorrow, Kyouran Nikki/Chico which start on Saturday and Penguin Girl which starts in two weeks. I’m not overly enthusiastic about Golgo, but the Saturday seem like they could both be rather good. A lot of what I’ll cover is balanced between what I like and what’s already being covered by half the blog-o-sphere. Sunday in particular is full of stuff I like, while Tuesday and Wednesday have basically nothing.

I suggest Omni, Totali and Hinano to fill in most of the rest of what I don’t hit up (especially… say… Da Capo or Macross). Anything which I’m actually excited about gets a little crown, though it’s not the be-all end-all for what I’ll be covering, just what I’ve enjoyed the most with a one sentence blurb designed to infuriate as many people as possible. Each title is a link to the longer writeup and more caps if you haven’t been keeping up. Still, there’s no substitute for coming to your own conclusion after all, so take it all with a grain of salt.

If you’ve got any input, flames, suggestions for Tuesday and Wednesday or desperate begging for something to be covered, go wild.

Monday

Monochrome Factor

Pretty boys! Pretty pretty boys! And pretty meh everything else.

Soul Eater

The most stylish and best animated completely generic shounen show since the last one.

Vampire Knight

I’m sticking to my Ouran Host Vampire Club comparison here. Complete with criminally not using their lead lady for the OP song.

Tuesday

Crystal Blaze

Genericest generic detective generic show to be generically made.

Himitsu ~Top Secret~

I can’t remember a single character’s name and I watched this yesterday. That should say something.

Real Drive

You can do a lot worse for your chubby girl/virtual reality/aquatic computer fix. Actually… I’m not sure that you can.

WEDNESDAY

Absolutely nothing. Nada. Not even Dragonaut.

THURSDAY

30 Rock

What? This is the best show on TV right now and you know it.

Allison & Lillia

Wasn’t really thrilled with the first episode, and the second didn’t win me over. Show just has next to no energy and Will’s voice scars me.

Kaiba

Well, it’s certainly unique. Not certain that translates to compelling or good yet though.

Kure-nai

The second episode got me a little more interested with Kurenai’s weird body, but the long naked loli bathing scene was ehhhhhhh.

Library War

More wacky than expected and a subtly off-kilter visual style. A little wary of the animation budget though.

Macross Frontier

Ewwwww mecha and pop idols. Go bother Omni.

To-Love Ru

 BOOBS.

xxxHOLiC Kei

xxxHOLiC with a decent budget and going through some of the best arcs in the manga? Hell, yes.

FRIDAY

Amatsuki

Someone. Please. Stop. The. Endless. Exposition.

Itazura na Kiss

I wasn’t a girl in the 1990s, and I’m not a girl now. Pass.

Tower of Druaga (and Flipside)

I don’t even know which episode was the real one. One was significantly better than the other, but it’s Gonzo. No matter which way they go, I’m confident they’ll screw it up.

SATURDAY

Absolutely Lovely Children

Girls that destroy city blocks fighting men with penis beams. There’s no way I’m passing this one up.

BLASSREITER

Gonzo: Abusing CG like it’s going out of style.

Da Capo II Season 2

I’m tempted to spoil this out of general hatred of Da Capo, but I’ll be nice. Suffice it to say, I would wipe Da Capo from the face of the planet if I could.

Kamen no Maid Guy

Poor production values and excessive fanservice kind of ruin what should have been burly maid comedy. Meh.

Kanokon

Boobs. Well, if they tone down the sleeze factor, it could be pretty decent. I dunno if I’m going to stick around to find out though.

SUNDAY

Code GEASS

In a show about terrorists and world conquest, I find it amusing that more characters have contracted amnesia than have died.

Neo-Angelique Abyss

I had more fun with the first episode than I had any right to have. That said, I was laughing at the episode, not with it. That kind of entertainment can’t continue for -that- long… or can it?

The Ruler of Nabari

JCStaff plus ninjas. Did you really think I’d pass up Tokyo Majin with a non-crappy story?

Special A

Shoujoish comedy a little high on the "clueless protagonist" side. Still, should be fun.

Wagaya no Oinari-sama

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn. Maybe now that the setup’s finished, something will happen, but I’m not holding my breath.

Once again, there are some days which are unfortunately clustered full of good shows while the others languish with nothing. There’s almost nothing that particularly excites me about Tuesday or Wednesday, so I’ll probably start doing something weekly then. Maybe a doujin game spotlight or just fanservicey image dumps. It’ll probably be another week or so while things shake out and we all have a better idea of how things are going to progress and I’ll update my schedule then. After one week though, that’s the new season in a nutshell.

  • Ryan A says:

Ouran Host Vampire Club… agreed! Who doesn’t love vampires?

  • Calawain says:

You should definitely blog 30 Rock, that shit is epic win. I have no idea why there are no shows on Wednesdays this season, I find that odd. Tuesday does look pretty dull as well…the stuff I like seems all bunched on like 2-3 days.

  • Aroduc says:

“All good parties need buzz. You see, people are like lemmings — Harvey Lemmings, my lawyer… dude never misses a party.”

  • tj han says:

Wait, since when did you become a prepubescent girl?

  • Aroduc says:

    Only when exhausted.

  • magmaburning says:

I think you did a good job with To Love-Ru’s description. It’s short, it’s simple, and it fits the anime perfectly.

I’m going to go wild now. SPECIAL A! SPECIAL A! SPECIAL A! Ok. I’m done.

  • totali says:

    “I wasn’t a girl in the 1990s, and I’m not a girl now. Pass.”

    Well put, my brother.

  • Westlo says:

    30 rock ftw!

  • Calawain says:

Just gotta watch out for those Black Crusaders.

  • Tsu-kun says:

Ahhhh!! The stick legs return! Damn you, Code Geass…

  • serenade_beta says:

“Suffice it to say, I would wipe Da Capo from the face of the planet if I could.”

    With you all the way.

  • Zeroblade says:

Whoa, 30 Rock looks so real! Which animation studio did it?
    /troll

Our watchlists look pretty much similar though; save for a few differences here and there.

  • sage says:

Wait, since when did you become a prepubescent girl?

    Only when exhausted

    I can testify to that!

    I wasn’t a girl in the 1990s

Yet you were watching Sailor Moon and Marmalade Boy at the time…

  • Setsukyie says:

Vampire Knight and Special A are the ones that I’m watching this season..
Haven’t watch Soul Eater and will watch it too.

    Ouran Host Vampire Club FTW..

  • what says:

    You have no taste

  • frog212 says:

WOW, thanks for your quick reviews! You have my respect for watching through so many generic shows. My tolerance for anime is slowly decreasing. Lets see how many shows I still watch by the end of the season.

  • Sniper says:

That kinda sucks, you won’t be blogging Code Geass. Try to think things over again.lol
